Warranty, Who and What's Covered. Empty Warranty, Who and What's Covered.

Two Different Warranties:
When you purchase your Apple device, it is automatically covered under a 1-year limited warranty, at no cost to you. This includes purchasing the device from Amazon, Best Buy, or any other Apple authorized reseller. If you purchased a used iPod, this warranty still applies if it is within 1-year from original purchase. As stated, this warranty is limited. There are many limitations to the warranty and in most cases, your issue may not be covered. This thread will explain what is and what isn't covered.

A second warranty policy that Apple provides is called Apple Care. This policy extends your warranty coverage to 2 years from the original purchase date of the device. You must purchase this plan while you are still within your 1-year limited warranty period. For example, an iPhone purchased on Jan 1, 2011 is eligible for Apple Care until Jan 1, 2012. After this time, you may no longer purchase Apple Care for your device. This plan costs $59 for the iPod touch, $69 for the iPhone, and $99 for the iPad (all prices are in USD and accurate as of Dec 12, 2010). It's important to note that Apple Care doesn't provide much more coverage than the 1-year limited warranty but rather extends it an additional year.

FAQ:
Q: Is warranty international? A: Yes.
Q: Dead pixels? A: Check with a Genius Bar employee.
Q: My device got wet in a spill, pool, toilet, sink, etc. Am I covered? A: No.
Q: I dropped my device. Am I covered? A: No.
Q: My device is all scratched. Can I get it replaced/fixed? A: No.
Q: I bought my device off somebody. Am I covered? A: If it is still within the warranty period, yes.
Q: I bought my device at...? A: Yes, you're device is still covered by Apple's standard 1-year warranty and is eligible for Apple Care coverage. Here's some of the well known retailers (our 'trusted list'):
Apple Online & Retail Stores
Amazon
iPhone carriers: AT&T, O2, Bell, Vodafone, Rogers, Orange, T-Mobile, Telus, Fido, etc.
Best Buy, Future Shop, other large electronic retailers
Walmart and Sam's Club

Common Problems Not Covered By Apple's Warranties:
Water damage (eg. spills or dropped in a pool, sink, or toilet)
Cracked screens
Cosmetic damage (scratches, dents, other wear and tear)
Lost or stolen devices
Any previously opened or modified device
A jailbroken device (however, a restore can be done prior to service)
What's Covered?
defective hardware or consumable parts (eg. battery)
Apple Care Only:
broken or defective headphones
broken or defective iPod sync cable
a battery that has depleted by more than 50% within your coverage period
What's Not Covered:
most software problems or issues that could be resolved by updating software
consumable parts (such as batteries) that are faulty but not as a result of defect
cosmetic damage (scratches, dents, cracks)
regular "wear and tear"
damage resulting from accident or abuse
includes water damage (spills or complete submersion)
indicated by red litmus paper in the headphone jack
damage resulting from fire, flood, or earthquake
damage resulting from repairs done by third party unauthorized service
modified products or parts
devices with a removed or defaced serial number
faulty cellular network or service problems (iPhone only)
devices that have been opened by the owner of the device
lost or stolen devices
What You'll Get Back:
Your device back (repaired)
A refurbished device in exchange of your damaged device
A refund of the purchase price of the device (highly unlikely)
Depending on where you purchase your device, third party warranties may also be available. Always ask the retailer what types of warranties they provide for your new Apple product!

Hope this is of use to some of you!
